 Intro:

If you examine pop, rock, metal, country, disco, funk and various other music styles
you'll notice that certain 16th note patterns are used more than others. So this
study is designed to target the development and the creative usage of only a handful
 of patterns.

You'll receive the best benefit from these studies while working slowing with a
metronome, focus on each sticking and foot pattern both separately and combined. The
more accurate your playing, the more accurate your feel of each permutation becomes
also. The object here is developing your sense of 16th notes. Feel free to try
other bass drum / Hi Hat patterns also. The number of permutations you and create
with these ideas alone with keep you going for a long while..

So, all these exercises are based upon the following groupings. We'll work in 16th
notes for the moment, you might like to try applying this concept to triplets for a
little fun later on, Feel Free.

  Grouping #a #b #c #d #e

       Count: 1 e + a 1 e + - 1 - + a 1 e - a - e + a
    Sticking: r l r l r l r - r - r l r l - l - l r l

       Snare: o o o o o o o - o - o o o o - o - o o o

Initially, all were going to do is construct patterns from these building blocks. To
save space and to make you think a little here, i'll just use the codes to show just
how many patterns can be created from such simple ideas.. the rest is up to you !!.

 And Finally, Some Examples
 --------------------------

Example Pattern Codes Count / Sticking

     #1 AAAA ='s 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
                                   R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L

     #2 BBBB ='s 1 e + - 2 e + - 3 e + - 4 e + -
                                   R L R - R L R - R L R - R L R -

     #3 CCCC ='s 1 - + a 2 - + a 3 - + a 4 - + a
                                   R - R L R - R L R - R L R - R L

     #4 AABB ='s 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                                   R L R L R L R L R L R - R L R -

     #5 CDCD ='s 1 - + a 2 e - a 3 - + a 4 e - a
                                   R - R L R L - L R - R L R L - L

     #6 CDCB ='s 1 - + a 2 e - a 3 - + a 4 e + -
                                   R - R L R L - L R - R L R L R -

                                   R L R L - L R L R L - L R L R -

ok, so you get the idea... So now here's some of the Raw permutations. You can
 rewrite these yourself.. :)

Etc. etc . etc. There are LOTS of THEM !!

How To Develop & Make Use of this Information - Application Idea's
  ------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so we have hundreds of possible rhythms (5*5*5*5 = 625 to be exact) we can choose
to distribute around the drums. The majority of these are certainly going to be
musical too. So, all we need is way too apply this raw knowledge to the drum kit.

So here's some ideas to et you started, don't be afraid to come up with your own
variations... Experimentation is, as always, highly recommended !!.

  Part #1
  -------

We can play each pattern on the Snare Drum, while PLaying straight quaters
with the bass drum or Hi hat Foot, or mixtures of quaters and 8th notes.

      Here are some examples...

This example based on the pattern "AEDB"

      Bass Drum Only Version.

                           A E D B

                   Count: 1 e + a - e + a 3 e - a 4 e + -

                   Snare: o o o o o o o o o o o o o
                BassDrum: o o o o

       Hi Hat Foot Only Version.

                           A E D B

                   Count: 1 e + a - e + a 3 e - a 4 e + -

                   Snare: o o o o o o o o o o o o o
                BassDrum: o o o o

                BassDrum: o o o o
               HiHatFoot: x x x x

8th note Bass Drum + Hi Hat Pattern, Double strokes (LLRR)

                           A E D B

                   Count: 1 e + a - e + a 3 e - a 4 e + -

                   Snare: o o o o o o o o o o o o o
                BassDrum: o o o o
               HiHatFoot: x x x x

Bass Drum + Hi Hat idea, try an 8th note "Samba"

                           A E D B

                   Count: 1 e + a - e + a 3 e - a 4 e + -

                   Snare: o o o o o o o o o o o o o
                BassDrum: o o o o
               HiHatFoot: x x

Well, that's more than enough to get you started, now remember to work through as
many of the hand pattern combinations with these foot patterns as you possibly can...
