 Intro:
 ------

This is a continuation of a previous permutation lesson. Please read Parts 1 & 2
 before attempting to progress.

 In Brief:
 ---------

This series of studies focuses on the application & development of rhythms from a
set collection of note groupings. Here we are going to explore ways of using these
permutations as Fills, around your drum set.

Here's the patterns we are focused on.

  Grouping #a #b #c #d #e

       Count: 1 e + a 1 e + - 1 - + a 1 e - a - e + a
    Sticking: r l r l r l r - r - r l r l - l - l r l

       Snare: o o o o o o o - o - o o o o - o - o o o

 Some Examples
 -------------

Example Pattern Codes Count / Sticking

     #1 AAAA ='s 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
                                   R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L

     #2 AABB ='s 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                                   R L R L R L R L R L R - R L R -

     #3 CDCD ='s 1 - + a 2 e - a 3 - + a 4 e - a
                                   R - R L R L - L R - R L R L - L

     #4 AEDB ='s 1 e + a - e + a 3 e - a 4 e + -
                                   R L R L - L R L R L - L R L R -

ok, got the idea ?, if not go back to lesson one in this series..

 Application Idea's Part #3 FILLS
 -----------------------------------

Turning our 625 rhythms into fills is really easy. We can just play them around the
 the drums for starters.

So here's some ideas to get you going, don't be afraid to come up with your own
variations... Experimentation is, as always, highly recommended !!.

Note: "*" characters are Tom Notes.

  3) Keeping a solid bass drum on each quarter note through out, we'll lay these patterns
around the drums. Firstly in a linear progression, then more randomly.

ok, For our first template, we'll map each quarter note to a unique drum. We'll
start on the SNARE then move to TOM #1, TOM #2 and finally, the Floor Tom

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

                   Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                Sticking: R L R L R L R L R L R R L R

                  Tom #1: * * * *
                  Tom #2: * * *
                   Snare: o o o o
               Floor Tom: * * *
                BassDrum: o o o o

Here's a funky Example based on the pattern "CDAB"

                           C D A B

                   Count: 1 - + a 2 e - a 3 e + a 4 e + -

                Sticking: R R L R L L R L R L R L R
                  Tom #1: * * *
                  Tom #2: * * * *
                   Snare: o o o
               Floor Tom: * * *
                BassDrum: o o o o

Example based on the pattern "CEEB"

                           C E E B

                   Count: 1 - + a - e + a - e + a 4 e + -
                Sticking: R R L L R L L R L R L R

                  Tom #1: * * *
                  Tom #2: * * *
                   Snare: o o o
               Floor Tom: * * *
                BassDrum: o o o o

For our Second template, we'll map each quarter note onto the following drums.
We'll start on the SNARE, move to TOM #1, Back to the SNARE and finally the Floor
      Tom

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

                   Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                Sticking: R L R L R L R L R L R R L R

                  Tom #1: * * * *
                  Tom #2:
                   Snare: o o o o o o o
               Floor Tom: * * *
                BassDrum: o o o o

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

And what about if we Alter the Bass drum Pattern... and Play a Samba

                           A A B B

                   Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                Sticking: R L R L R L R L R L R R L R

                  Tom #1: * * * *
                  Tom #2:
                   Snare: o o o o o o o
               Floor Tom: * * *
                BassDrum: o o o o
              HiHat Foot: x x

For our Third template, let's jump ahead a bit here and this time we'll play all
the 1234 counts on the First Tom and any other notes (the E+A's) on the snare.

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

For our 4th template, this time lets play all the "E" counts on Tom #1 and the
      other notes on the snare.

                BassDrum: o o o o

For our 5th template, this time lets play all the "+" counts on Tom #1 and the
      other notes on the snare.

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

               Floor Tom:
                BassDrum: o o o o

For our 6th template, this time lets play all the "a" counts on Tom #1 and the
      other notes on the snare.

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

               Floor Tom:
                BassDrum: o o o o

For our 7th template, lets play all the E counts on Tom1, all the + counts on tom#2
and All other notes will be on the Snare.

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

                   Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                Sticking: R L R L R L R L R L R R L R

                  Tom #1: * * * *
                  Tom #2: * * * *
                   Snare: o o o o o o
               Floor Tom:
                BassDrum: o o o o

For our 8th template, lets just mix those up a bit. We'll play 1 and 2 on Tom #1
and 3+ and 4+ on tom #2 and the floor tom. All other notes will be on the Snare.

Example based on the pattern "AABB"

                           A A B B

                   Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + - 4 e + -
                Sticking: R L R L R L R L R L R R L R

                  Tom #1: * *
                  Tom #2: *
                   Snare: o o o o o o o o o o
               Floor Tom: *
                BassDrum: o o o o

Well, that's more than enough to get you started. The possibilities are truly
endless. Try and work through as many of the hand pattern combinations as you can

Don't be afraid to try your own permutations.... Just Experiment!!

And then lets move onto the final Part #4, Advanced Grooves.
