Intro:

The following exercises will help develop your independence skills and are focused
on the use of mixed sticking patterns on double bass drums. If your not familiar
with mixed stickings, they are simply patterns that are made of up Single & Double
strokes, in various combinations. For simplicity sake, we are only going to work
with patterns that resolve in groupings of eight 16th notes.

                  Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

      Bass Drum Pattern: R-L-R-L-R-R-L-L-R-L-R-L-R-R-L-L-

The basic patterns are made of up various mixed sticking combinations written as 16th
notes. To add the 1/32 note fill in's, we are going to introduce a note in between
each double stroke. Thus, if we add our fill in's to the previous example, we get this.

                  Count: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

      Bass Drum Pattern: R-L-R-L-RLR-LRL-R-L-R-L-RLR-LRL-

During this study, we'll keep the hands playing straight 1/8 note time. They will act
as our 'guide' throughout these exercises. You will notice also that the lead is
changing constantly between your feet. This can be a great exercise to break any
dependences you might have between your right hand and your feet (for right handed
 players)

Aim #1: Get comfortable playing each rhythm through once, with & without the counting, if
you can do this, try playing it 2,3,4 times through or more without stopping.

Aim #2: Try for a range of tempos, Start out slowly (around 50 / 60 bpm's) then medium
(80bpm) and fast up to (100/110 bpm's). The objective is make each note clean
        and evenly spaced.

Aim #3: Try playing each line of exercises without stopping, keeping it evenly spaced
the entire time. Next, Try 2 lines, then 3 lines and ultimately the entire
lesson from top to bottom. To take this another step further, you can try
playing the exercises randomly, this will help your reading and visualization
        skills greatly.

Note: Rather than use a separate line for each bass drum, I've just combined them,
this makes them easier to read.. The kicks will be represented with a (R) for
Right Bass Drum and a (L) for Left Bass drum. These lessons are also written for
a right handed player, so you'll have to invert them if your left handed
