Intro:


   We've all played a shuffle on the hi hat, so I figured I'd reverse it and play the
 shuffle part on the snare drum.  This creates a somewhat understated challenge, as
 we're entering the world of layered hand patterns... 

   What are layered hand patterns ?..   Patterns that overlap, that have notes played in
 unison, as apposed to linear rhythms which don't have notes that are played in unison..
 Simple enough...


   So we're going to play the shuffle part on the snare drum with Accents on 2 and 4. All
 other snare notes are to be considered as ghosts.  We'll keep the bass drum fixed on
 counts 1 & 3, and ad-lib some right hand parts..  This is quite a challenge, and a
 musical one at that.... 


  Note:  I've Written the Snare Line as follows..


           Count:       1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a
           Snare:       o   o O   o o   o O   o


        So, For notation people the above ='s the following..

Aim #1: Get comfortable playing each rhythm through once, with & without the counting, if
        you can do this, try playing it 2,3,4 times through or more without stopping. 


Aim #2: Try for a range of tempos, Start out slowly (around 70 / 80 bpm's) then medium
        (100bpm) and fast up to (120/130 bpm's or higher). The objective is make each
        note clean and evenly spaced. 


Aim #3: Try playing each line of exercises without stopping, keeping it evenly spaced
        the entire time. Next, Try 2 lines, then 3 lines and ultimately the entire
        lesson from top to bottom. To take this another step further, you can try
        playing the exercises randomly, this will help your reading and visualization
        skills greatly.
