Double Bass Drums

16th Note Grooves with 32nd Note Fill In's By Kevin Picone

In recent years the topic of mixed sticking and rudiment application studies on bass drums has been very prevalent. This topic has been further fueled, by the success and mastery of  it from such popular players as Dean Castronovo and Virgil Donati (Check the Video section for AVI clips of Virgil)

The following studies are aimed at the intermediate to advanced player, and are quite challenging to master.  They are based upon, and can be thought of as two separate exercises in one really.  Firstly, you'll need to learn the sticking framework (the 16th notes), of each pattern, then apply the fill inn's to give you the desired 32nd note spurts.  For simplicities sake, all of these exercises are designed to resolve themselves within one measure of 4/4 time, most resolve themselves within one half note (2 quarter notes).
