Here we are going to take a more analytical approach to playing, almost mathematical at times. Instead of thinking of a groove or fill as fixed 'bar', it's quite common to break down bars down into smaller clusters of notes, normally referred to as groupings. A player might then choose a collection of groupings and phrase them against the bar, or even over the bar lines. For examples of this you can examine Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater / Liquid Tension Experiment ), Virgil Donati (On the Virg), Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio and many more !
